Dusty’s Derby Dream

“Dusty’s Derby Dream” – that may be a little dramatic. As Dustin Martin and his old mate Dane Swan carve up the west coast of the United States on their annual off season trip, the fortunes of a race horse called Main Stage are probably far from the front of Dusty’s mind. But, whether he cares much or not, the football star is a part owner in a horse on a pretty exciting Spring Carnival journey.

Main Stage won the Listed UCI Stakes (1800m) at Flemington on October 7 with a huge run from the back of a 14 horse field and became the favourite for the $1.5 million AAMI Victoria Derby. The Tiger crew involved in the horse includes Dusty, Josh Caddy, Dion Prestia, Reece Conca, Anthony Miles and assistant coach Andrew McQualter – the syndicate name is Dusty’s Boys. Other media outlets reported that other Richmond players including Jack Riewoldt and Shaun Grigg were also part owners but they were actually just taking advantage of the free booze in the mounting yard enclosure after the Main Stage win in the UCI Stakes which came exactly one week after the Tigers drought-breaking premiership win.

This weekend Main Stage will start as one of the favourites in the 2000m Caulfield Classic as the horses co-trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young build him up to the 2500m Victoria Derby on November 4.

The Tigers took home the big prize in the AFL this season and Dustin Martin won every individual award imaginable. Can Dusty’s Boys continue this golden streak on the back of Main Stage through the Spring Carnival?
